In 1994 Sonia commenced working in the funeral industry when she was just 16 years of age. She soon became the first qualified embalmer in South Canterbury.
A few years later she began working with Emirates Airlines, rising through the ranks to become Cabin Crew Manager. While she thoroughly enjoyed her work with Emirates, in 2010, she decided it was time to return to the Funeral Industry in Timaru, where she was born and raised and devoting precious time to raising her 2 children with her husband on their dairy farm.
Sonia’s exposure to bereaved families at a young age has found her develop the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. These attributes were magnified with her years spent with Emirates, working amongst many cultures and customs. The lessons that life has taught her are often highlighted through the expression of empathy.
Sonia’s diverse working career and outgoing personality found her very much in demand as a speaker at community groups, giving talks about numerous topics including the funeral industry. She has provided helpful advice on how to arrange and plan funerals. She continues this work at Heartland.
When the position of Manager at Heartland became available, there was no question that this was an ideal fit for Sonia. She is working in an industry she loves, while still maintaining excellent professional service.”
